Why Strength Training Is the Best Anti-Aging Strategy (And Cardio Alone Isn't Enough)

If you're over 40 and your exercise routine is mostly running, cycling, or walking, you're only addressing part of the equation. Cardiovascular exercise matters. But when it comes to fighting the physical decline that comes with aging, strength training is the single most powerful tool available to you.

After 33+ years of training clients across all ages, I've watched this pattern repeat itself: people who prioritize aerobic fitness alone still lose muscle, still get stiff, still develop aches and pains, and still watch their metabolism slow down. People who add smart strength training to the mix? They reverse those trends.

The Numbers

The average person loses about 5 pounds of lean muscle mass per decade between ages 25 and 65. That's roughly 20 pounds of metabolically active tissue gone by retirement age. Resting metabolic rate drops 2-4% per decade alongside it. A 25-year-old burning 1,500 calories at rest will be down to about 1,200 by age 55.

Because muscle is so metabolically active, much of this metabolic decline is directly tied to muscle loss. That means it isn't inevitable aging. It's largely a lifestyle problem, and lifestyle problems have lifestyle solutions.

What Smart Training Looks Like After 40

Training after 40 doesn't mean doing what you did at 25. It means training smarter. At Ocean State Fit, every program starts with how you move. Before we add load, we address restrictions in mobility and stability. This move-well-first approach is what keeps clients training consistently without setbacks.

A well-designed program for someone over 40 includes mobility work to maintain range of motion, compound movements like squats, deadlifts, rows, and presses scaled to where you are, core stability that goes well beyond crunches, and auto-regulation, meaning adjusting the workout in real time based on how you feel that day. Sleep was bad? Shoulder is cranky? A good coach adapts the plan so you still make progress without digging a hole.

What Clients Actually Experience

Clients who commit to consistent strength training report better energy, better sleep, less joint pain, improved posture, and clothes that fit the way they want. Many say they feel better in their 50s and 60s than they did in their 30s. That's not an exaggeration. It's what happens when you stop losing muscle and start building it back.

Getting Started

Think of your body like your retirement fund. The earlier you invest, the better positioned you are down the road. But even if you're starting later, the returns on consistent strength training are real. You just need a plan built for your body, your goals, and your life.
